Week 1: The origin of animation

Thinking about animation, it seems like it is a wide range that includes 2D, 3D, stop motion animation and so many other forms. ‘ People desire to make a picture move’ said by Wells in the book. Indeed, we can find that this sort of strong wish can be reflected trace back to the Paleolithic age, the people at that time started to paint continuous images on the cave walls. Another example is a colourful pottery pot with human face and fish patterns made in the Neolithic age, showcasing continuous dance movements on the inside pottery. All these are the signposts that people have the think about recording the movement of the flat object. However, these simple continuous images can’t satisfy some people’s desires and ambitions. So, it can be said that animation is inevitable appear.

The definition of animation is not very clear as it develops, as Wells said, animation is defined as a ‘cartoon’ by children, and other forms such as Japanese Manga films and Disney, are more likely to be a fixed impression in the human mind. Animation has had to surmount the incredulity of its invisible art forms. Fortunately, scholars have proved the platform for recovery of animation as developmental animation, and define cartoons as orthodoxy animation.
